I haven’t had a chance to rant in a while and there has be OH so much to rant about. Hope I can remember it all.
Jury Duty
I got called in on jury duty this week. No big deal, I like spending a day reading a book. But the thing that got me was, at no point did anyone check my ID. I never said a word to anyone the entire day except “HERE!” when they did the dismissal roll call. So I could have sent my retired father to sit there for me for the day. Imaging if you were a criminal hiding from the cops, what better place could you hide than the court jury assembly room. I need to work that into a story some time.
The strangest thing I saw while I was there was this guy, typical construction worker type, got pissed off because someone took his seat during the break. His stuff wasn’t left behind, nothing showed he was sitting there… and there was no assigned seating. Hell, there were plenty of seats… but this jackhole ended up yelling at this woman who appeared that English wasn’t her first language. It was pitiful.
Oh, and no, I didn’t get called to even the selection process. Just sat in a chair reading a detective novel.
Port Authority
Under ‘not getting it’ you will find a picture of George W Bush. How do you stake your entire administration and terms of office to the war on terror… then give the running of US ports to a questionable nation? Do I think they’re a terrorist group? No idea… but the point is, the government has no idea either. When asked how deeply they looked into the company’s connection to Al Queda, the guy in charge said “we don’t do that”. Maybe they should. And King George sits back and says ‘it’s all good’ and we’re supposed to just accept it. Has anyone explained to him that a 34% approval rating is a pretty good indication that you are not working with a mandate from the people?
Convention Season
I hate convention season. I love conventions, but I hate convention season. Why? Because as a freelancer I can only afford to get myself to a couple cons a year. Comic-Con, Wizard World LA, Wizard World Dallas and maybe Wondercon and I missed it this year. But, I get to see on-line all the coverage from the other conventions and feel left out. All the fun everyone is having while I sit at home. This last weekend was a double header of disappointment as both Megacon and the New York Con took place… and I sat home. Can’t wait for WWLA.
Winick’s Words
I’ve come to the conclusion that I don’t enjoy reading the work of Judd Winick. I have nothing against the man nor do a feel an animosity towards his success. The truth is, I just don’t like his stories. And I’ve tried a lot of them. Green Arrow was my favorite book from Kevin Smith’s re-launch to Brad Meltzer’s run. But I’ve hated it since Winick came on board and finally stopped buying it. I loved Loeb and Lee’s HUSH but quickly stopped buying Batman after a few issues by Winick. Tried to follow the Red Hood/Jason Todd story and just found it to be boring. But this week I sat down and read the answer to the mystery… how Jason Todd came back… and I didn’t like it. Overall, I wish him the best of luck… but I’ll be skipping books with the name Winick on the cover.
To Crazy to Die
I read this week that a man was deemed to crazy to be put to death. He’s been in jail for a while… why… he one day woke up and decide to kill 13 people. 7 of them children, 5 of those his own. Also he killed his three live-in girlfriends… an ex-girlfriend… one of their mother and one of their sister. But the court decided that he didn’t comprehend the death penalty so they couldn’t kill him. Why not? Are you going to be able to rehabilitate this guy? His doctors say ‘no’. So why not? You put someone in jail to rehabilitate them (not that it works). The death penalty is not rehabilitation; it’s what you do when someone is too screwed up to be in the normal populace. I’m not saying we should start killing off all the crazy people… and I’m told that if we did sentence this guy to death it would be a slippery slope… but come on, this one is pretty straight forward: crazy, killed 13 people… if the next one is crazy and not killed anyone, no death penalty. Pretty easy rules to follow.
Scottish Carson
Best show on TV right now… The Craig Ferguson show. The guy is hilarious and insanely talented. I’m not going to explain what he does. Just turn on the show and watch. He’s what Dave, Jay and Jimmy wish they were… he’s funny.
Okay, that’s enough things off my chest. Time for sleep.
